Effect of Niobium on Microstructure and Strengthening Mechanism of HSLA Steel

Abstract:Microstructure and mechanical properties of three HSLA (highstrength lowalloy) steels with different niobium content (0.021%,0.081% and 0.17%) were investigated. The results show that niobium increment retains the formation of pearlite and makes fraction of acicular ferrite and fine niobium carbonitride niobium increase. Meanwhile, the analysis of strengthening mechanism of three steels indicated that the effect of grain refining strengthening is almost the same but precipitation hardening is obviously increased with increasing niobium content.
