Abstract:The cause and morphology of typical defects in cold rolled strip were studied. Simulation rolling experiment (SRE) was carried out. It was shown that entrapped mould flux was the major part of inclusion type defects leading to mottling on the surface of cold rolled strip. The morphology of the mottling was almost similar to the mottling caused by pressedin scale. Morphology of defects in the simulation rolled strip was consistent with actual ones, so simulation rolling is an effective way to study the defect formation and evolution. The typical defect analysis and results of simulation rolling showed that deep entrapped striplike mould flux in cast slab could cause lamination and the deep entrapped lumpylike mould flux could cause penetrating cracks in the middle of cold rolled strip. The pressedin scale caused by scratches on roller tables between continuous caster and the last stand, was one of the reasons for formation of sliver on the surface of cold rolled strip.
