Abstract:The decarburization layer of spring steels with different Nb contents were measured by metallographic microscopic method, the effect of niobium and its content on the surface decarburization sensitivity of 60Si2Mn spring steel was systematically investigated. The results show that niobium can effectively reduce the decarburization sensitivity of 60Si2Mn spring steel. However, the depth of the decarburization does not decrease with the niobium content further increases. The diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite in different temperatures were calculated by means of Thermo-Calc DICTRA software in which the effects of niobium and other elements on diffusion of carbon in austenite were considered. And the variation of decarburizing depths of the experimental steels was calculated by the Fick’s second law. It agrees with the measured data and can be used to investigate the effects of other alloying elements on the decarburization more effectively.
