Abstract The shape and surface quality are important quality index of skinpassed galvanized strip. According to the characteristics of technology of skinpassed galvanized strip, a mathematic model to design the shape of rolls on temper mill was established．In this model, the uniform distribution of front tension is taken as the objective.The model has been used to design the shape of rolls temper mill at Panzhihua Steel. The test results indicated that the new rolls improve the control of work roll bending and the homogeneity of rolling pressure and improve the quality of skinpassed galvanized strip.
