Abstract For CSP thin slab caster at Zhujiang Steel, a comprehensive mathematical simulation concerning fluid flow, fluctuation of bath surface, heat transfer and solidification of melt was performed with given SEN and measured heat fluxes. It was found that the circulation of liquid steel, in which two uppervortexes occupy most space, is totally localized in the funnelpart of mold. The fluctuation of bath surface is caused by upvortex streams impinging on surface and deviating from the surface, and secondary vortexes exist below meniscus 100 mm off mold narrow faces. Except that there is obvious superheat at lower sides of SEN, the temperature of liquid steel in mold is around the liquidus, and the surface temperature of slab and growth of solidifying shell are affected by streams from SEN, and the hottest zone on slab surface is below meniscus near mold narrow faces.
