Abstract The effect of complex electromagnetic stirring on solidification structure of spring steel 60Si2CrVAT blooms was investigated.The results revealed that, with electromagnetic stirring, center shrinkage cavity and porosity were significantly reduced. The spacing of secondary dendritic arms was in the range of 30250 μm,the percentage of equiaxed zone was increased from 19.6% to 25% and the quality of blooms was significantly improved.
