Abstract A physical model was established by choosing emulsion drops simulated as inclusions to study the mechanism of inclusion removal from molten steel by bubbles during the refining process with argon blowing, and the effect of operation parameters on inclusion removal was investigated. The results show that both the smaller and the larger gas flowrates seemed to be efficient for inclusion removal. The inclusions are mainly removed by attachment to bubbles at smaller gas flowrate and mainly removed by capture in the wakes behind big bubbles at larger gas flowrate.
