Abstract The buckling and “fish tail” are often occurred in sizing press, which can reduce the metal yield. The metal flow of slab in sizing was analyzed and the buckling and “fish tail” at slab head and end were studied with plastic collapse theory according to the mutual influence of end and deformation zone. On the theoretical basis, the compressing roll gap was increased and buckling was reduced. A new sizing process schedule was applied to modify the sizing process and width reduction accuracy was improved obviously, the cutting loss at strip head and tail end was decreased also.
