Abstract Climate change caused by the GHG emission has become one important issue globally. The GHG emission, which refers to CO2 primarily, in the Chinese iron and steel industry is introduced. It is pointed out that energy consumption is the main reason to result the CO2 emission for steel industry. The impact of energy structures in the typical steel manufacturing process on the CO2 emission is analyzed, based on comparing between two typical production processes, and the impact of different sources and structures of raw material and fuels in the different processes on the CO2 emission is also discussed in the paper. Finally, the CO2 emission of the new generation steel manufacturing process has been estimated.
