Abstract The precipitation of nonmetallic inclusions containing magnesium was calculated thermodynamically in X120 melt. When 0.00046%<w([Mg])< 0.0033% and w([Al])=0.025%,inclusion of MgO·A12O3 was formed. When w([Mg]) > 0.0033%,MgO inclusion was formed. While w([Ti])=0.016% and w([Mg])=00008%,2MgO·Ti2O3 was formed. The experiment showed that all the inclusions in X120 steel treated with magnesium contained magnesium, they were much finer than that in steel treated with calcium,of which 85% were smaller than 2 μm in size; 145% were in the range of 25 μm,and 05% were in the range of 510 μm, and there was no inclusion larger than 10 μm.
