Abstract The effect of different additives on solidification of high carbon steel with ultrasonic treatment was investigated. The results showed that with ultrasonic treatment the solidification structure of high carbon steel containing TiFe or Ce could be refined significantly. But aluminum could not refine the solidification structure evidently. The refinement of high carbon steel solidification structure is attributed to the Ti(C, N) particles served as the heterogeneous nuclei to promote the nucleation in the melt during solidification and prevente the primary austenite grain growing up by pinning grains boundaries. The increase in Ce oxide and oxysulfide solid particle number by ultrasonic cavitation is equal to increase of heterogeneous nuclei number during solidification promoting the solidification structure refinement.
