Abstract In order to analyze the distribution of internal frictional force and determine the least layer number for expansion of coiler, the coiling process was studied with FEM. For strips from 5 mm to 20 mm in thickness,and the layer number from 2 to 5, the internal metal flow in strip and nodes at innermost layer nodes during coiling was studied with relative displacement of strip head as a criterion,and the conditions of no loose winding during coiling were determined. The results indicated that the distribution of frictional force is changed from layer to layer,and 5 layers of strip are enough for stable coiling. The study is useful for improving the metal yield and reducing the wear of auxiliary roller.
