Abstract The microstructure and hardness of the layer of H13 tool steel gasnitrided in different heat treatment conditions were studied by Xray, SEM and microhardness test. The results show that, the thickness of nitrided layer was 0.24 mm with a compound layer 10 μm, surface hardness was HV950(HRC67), for the specimen, which was nitrided after “quenching and twice tempering” and “quenching and threetime tempering”. The compound layer mainly consisted of εphase(Fe2N), γ′phase and Fe3O4, and diffusion layer consisted αFe、εphase(Fe3N), γ′phase and CrN. However, the specimen nitrided after “quenching” and “quenching and once tempering” couldn’t have a nitrided layer of comprehensive properties.
