Abstract Microstructure evolution and the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of Q235 steel were studied by thermal simulation and industrial tests. Treated by TMCP, the plates, which can meet the requirements for Q345, were produced successfully from Q235 slabs. The TMCP treated Q235 plates have advantages of low yield ratio(0.69—0.77), high elongation (average value of 26.5%) and good welding performance. Such Q235 plates have a good foreground of application.
