Abstract Steel, as a kind of new materials, growths steadily year by year, mainly attributed to the achievements in the fundamental studies. It has been focused on fundamental studies in the Institute for Structural Materials of CISRI, and unknowns have been investigated. The paper will overview the recent developments in the steel studies of three aspects: strengthening in steels, improvement in steel duration, and the safety of steel parts. The new ideas and technologies have been initiated: microalloying, DIT, grain refinement, online annealing, delayed fracture, fatigue resistance, nitrogen alloying, toughening of UHSS, HSMS and steels for nuclear power station, etc. It is believed that the new generation steel will be developed on the knows from fundamental steel studies.
