Abstract A threedimensional mathematical model of heat transfer in cast iron stave was developed. The model is used to analyze the temperature field of stave with iterative calculation for slag skull melting. The heat load limit of blast furnace stave was found under different conditions. The influence of the stave structure and cooling conditions on heat load limit is discussed. The results show that the water rate from 2 m/s to 4 m/s had a small effect on heat load limit.The gap between water pipe and iron block decreases the cooling ability of cast iron stave. By increasing water pipe diameter from 48 mm to 70 mm,the heat load limit was increased by 45%.
