Abstract The effect of rare earth element on impact toughness of 430 ferrite stainless steel at -20 ℃, 0 ℃, 20 ℃ was studied by metallographic examination, SEM and electron spectroscopy. The results show that the modification of inclusions can slower crack propagation. Fracture is changed from cleavage to ductile fracture by adding rare earth element to the 430 steel. The transverse impact value of lowRE 430 steel can be increased by about five times.
