Abstract The sulfur behavior in the steel bath of 120 t converter during the blowing process was investigated. The source of sulfur was identified through calculating the material balance and the influences of temperature at end point, the basicity and the FeO content of the molten slag on the partition ratio of sulfur between molten slag and steel were analyzed. The results showed that with the increase of the temperature at the end point and the basicity of molten slag the partition ratio of sulfur is increased, and the partition ratio of sulfur is increased with the FeO content of the molten slag until the FeO content is 18% then the partition ratio of sulfur is decreased. So, decreasing the sulfur load of the molten metal and furnace charge is the prerequisite for production of low sulfur steels.
