Abstract Based on total heat exchange factor method, the online control process for reheating furnace was studied by simulation. In the study, the DDC and SCC control algorithms and the simulation model of reheating furnace which provides a perfect software platform for offline study were included. The simulation model describes the complex heat exchange among gas, steel, wall and thermalcouples based on energy equilibrium, and the dynamic compensation for change of gas emmisivity with gas temperature is realized to improve the simulation accuracy. The heating curve method was adopted to study the SCC strategies for normal and typical strong dynamic operation of furnace, as a result, the optimal control algorithm suitable for the furnace was obtained.
