Abstract Boric acid composite agent was sprayed on hot coke and the effects on coke reactivity, shielding from alkali and resistance to erosion of alkali were studied. The composition and morphology of coke surface after spray was analyzed using EDS and XPS. The results showed that the decomposition of boric acid happens on coke surface and B2O3 is produced covering on the surface of coke pores to prevent coke from contact with CO2.Boric acid decreases coke reactivity, shielding the coke from alkali and increases resistance to erosion of alkali. The degree of influence increases with boric acid concentration.
