Abstract A finite element model was built to describe the temperature field in the tundish by using of turbulence theory.The application of FEM to simulation of temperature field in the tundish and description of temperature distribution in the tundish was presented. The results indicate that the flow of molten steel in tundish in many cases is under nonisothermal condition, and the temperature distribution pattern of molten steel is different. The temperature distribution in modified tundish is homogeneous and such tundish is useful to enhance the quality of continuou cast slab.
