Research on Effect of Decreasing Degree of Superheat on Solidification Structure of Billet |

Abstract The transformation from columnar grain to equiaxed grain would be promoted by decreasing degree of superheat of liquid steel in the mould to increase equiaxed grain ratio, which was beneficial for homogenization of billet structure. Based on above-mentioned theory, a cooling nozzle for decreasing degree of superheat was designed and fabricated. Commercial trials were carried out on a billet caster using the cooling nozzle. The effect of integration of the low superheat degree technology on solidification structure of billet was analyzed. The result showed that decreasing range of degree of superheat in the mould would be 14℃ with the cooling nozzle. The equiaxed grain ratio of billet produced by the cooling nozzle was increased by more than 8%~24% and the severity of center segregation and cavitation had been reduced.
