Abstract Currently the main pellet binder is bentonite, but bentonite will reduce the grade of pellets. So people have been committed to find new high-quality bentonite or binder. By analyzing basic physical and chemical properties of the new pellet binder A and technological properties of the sample, the best conditions for preheating and calcination were found out. Under optimal conditions, roasting verification experiments were done. Compared with the new binder A, high quality sodium bentonite was used as benchmark experiments. The results show that pellets with 1% of the new binder A have better connecting-crystal characteristics and higher strength under the same conditions, which can replace the bentonite completely. Pellets with the new binder A can achieve the production requirements at a lower temperature preheating and calcination process, which contributes to energy conservation. Bentonite was replaced to be used in pellet production by the new type of binder A, which has a good future.
