Abstract The utilization of metallurgical solid wastes is a major task for the steel industry in the 21st century，the removal of harmful elements from metallurgical solid waste and the recovery of helpful elements are the key technologies. In this experiment，a new technique of deoxidation of zinc from metallurgical wastes was proposed，the metallurgical dusts were made into composite pellets with double-layer structure，self-reductive micro-cracking test and industrial application tests were carried out. The results showed that the composite ball was added into the torpedo tank，and the reduction effect was achieved. The composite ball was self-reduced and micro-cracked by the waste heat of hot metal ladle and molten iron heat，which provided the dynamic conditions for the reduction reaction，and realized the high efficiency comprehensive utilization of the iron and zinc dust.
