Abstract Experiments with different continuous casting processes were carried out to clarify the principle of the white band formation in the billets. The influences of F-EMS and final stage of solidification reduction on the formation of white band during CC were analyzed. Then according to the experimental results，the white bands in the billets were characterized and the mechanisms for their formation during CC were proposed in view of technical operation conditions. The white bands were found dense conglomerate dendrite-structure，whose definite structure type depends on the position of EMS. During solidification，the force field on the billets causes compactness in the area of white band，resulting in denser structure than other areas around. These dense dendritic areas with a low concentration of solutes appear white after pickling，forming the white band in billets.
