Abstract Steelmaking slag is a good adsorbent for heavy metal ions because it has large specific surface area,is porous and is easily hydrolyzed and ionized Ca2+,Fe2+,OH- and hydroxyl groups SOH in aqueous solution. The removal rate of heavy metal ions in waste water by steelmaking slag is higher. The removal mechanism of heavy metal ions by steelmaking slag includes physical and chemical adsorption. Physical adsorption relies on mainly the Van der Waals force between steelmaking slag and heavy metal ions. Chemical adsorption includes surface coordination, cation exchange, chemical precipitation and electronation. Removal efficiency of heavy metal ions by steelmaking slag mainly is affected by pH value of the solution, initial concentration of heavy metal ions, compositions of steelmaking slag and the particle sizes of steelmaking slag. However, most of adsorption studies about the heavy metal ions removal by steelmaking slag were static and most of waste water samples were single component synthetic which was different with reality. Therefore, the dynamic adsorption about heavy metal ions removal by steelmaking slag needs further research and the effects of other pollutants in waste water on heavy metal ions removal efficiency by steelmaking slag need to be discussed deeply.
