Abstract For the purpose of improve cutting property and anisotropy of steels imultaneously, the control of sulfidemorphologywas the key technique for producing free cutting steel.Effect of Mg addition and Ca addition on the composition and diameter of inclusion for the sulfur steel were studied. In the laboratory, the steel was melted by the vertical resistance furnace.One of the steels was treated by Mg, and the other steel was treated by Ca. The samples extracted from the liquid steel were polished and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer. The results show that the steel with Mg addition has tinier oxide inclusions than that with Ca addition. The tiny Mg-Al-O inclusions are the nucleus of MnS in the solidification process of liquid steel. The Mg of composite sulfide (Mg-Mn-S) surrounding oxide core derives from Mg diffusion of the oxide core. The Ca-Al-O oxide of Ca treated steel also could serve as the nucleus of MnS in solidification process of liquid steel. The Ca of composite sulfide (Ca-Mn-S) comes from Ca in the liquid steel. In addition,the mass percent of Ca in the oxide core increaseswith the diffusion of Ca in the composite sulfide.
