Abstract In order to utilize the characteristics of sintering itself and realize NO_x emission reduction in the sintering process, the influence of hot air pre-drying of sintering mixture on the production quality index of sintering and the NO_x emission concentration in the sintering flue gas was studied by sintering cup test under laboratory conditions. Through the analysis and research of the experimental results, it is shown that with the increase of the hot air drying time of the sintering mixture, the drum strength and the sinter falling strength of sinter show an overall increasing trend. The sintering yield, vertical sintering speed, and sintering utilization coefficient increased first and then decreased. With the increase of hot air drying time, the reference mass concentration of NO_x and NO_x emission of flue gas will gradually decrease in the sintering process. When the drying time reaches 30 min, the NO_x mass concentration can be reduced by about 20% under the 16% oxygen volume percent baseline, and the total NO_x emission is reduced by 22.82% compared with the baseline sintering while the quality and yield of sinter keep constant. Hot air drying of sintering mixture can reduce the emission of NO_x from flue gas and realize the purpose of NO_x emission reduction from the sintering process, which is a feasible and economical route for iron and steel enterprises to achieve the emission of NO_x up to the standard.
