Abstract In order to remit the severe pollution and greenhouse gas emission in the metallurgical industry, the application of biomass as clean energy is now absolutely urgent. A comparison study on reduction characteristics of VTM by biomass and anthracite reduction of VTM was carried out, referring to the reduction rate, mineral phase transformation, and iron grain growth. Results indicated that biomass improved the reduction rate of VTM due to its superior thermochemical activity. Biomass reduction facilitated the formation of anosovite and rutile rather than the ulvite phase. However, for the inferior durability of biomass, samples always showed up lower metallization degrees and finer iron grain size in the late stage of the reduction process. Compound reductant with a certain proportion of biomass and anthracite not only ensured reduction rate and metallization degree but also promoted the iron grain growth, achieving synergy purpose.
