Abstract:A three dimensional mathematical model for electromagnetic field and fluid flow in slab continuous casting mold with mold electromagnetic stirring(M-EMS) was built. Electromagnetic field and fluid flow with 2-pole pairs and 4-pole pairs have been studied using the SIMPLER algorithm. The results show that the distribution of magnetic flux density B and electromagnetic force F present a centrosymmetric property in the mold. F distributes circumferentially in the horizontal plane between each pairs of N pole and S pole at two sides of the mold. F is bigger at the broad face than that at the narrow face or the centre of slab. Compared with 4-pole pairs, higher B, F and velocities can be obtained in the molten steel with 2-pole pairs. There are four circumfluence regions in the longitudinal section near the strand wide surface without M-EMS, while two circumfluence regions on the left side almost vanish and two circumfluence regions on the right side become smaller with M-EMS.
