Abstract Formation mechanism of slab corner cracks was investigated systematically in Qiangang. Temperature measurement of slab corner and high temperature mechanical properties tests shows that the bending and unbending in brittle zone is the main reason for slab corner cracks. Countermeasures were carried out in steel composition control, casting machine maintenances, secondary cooling optimization, and mould taper adjustment, which decreased slab corner cracks obviously.
