Coupling of fluid flow and solidification with roll type electromagnetic stirring in continuous slab casting |

Abstract Based on the Maxwell’s and the[k-ε]turbulence equations, a transportation model has been developed to simulate the electromagnetic stirring (EMS) in a solidifying strand. The interaction of solidification and fluid flow in an ultra-thick slab under the effect of roll-type EMS has been investigated. The results show that solidified shell significantly weakens the effect of EMS. The velocity of molten steel and the range of the re-circulation region in liquid pool decrease compared to those without solidification in continuous slab casting. The solid shell is influenced by the interaction of heat transfer and fluid flow with EMS.
