Abstract Through magnetic field measurement of M-EMS at different electromagnetic stirring parameters in the billet caster mould�� the characteristics of magnetic field were analyzed�� and the changing patterns of the magnetic field with current and frequency and the distribution characteristics of the magnetic field were summarized. Through confirmation of the index of center carbon segregation and ratio of equiaxial crystal�� M-EMS parameters were determined as the current index was 4 and the frequency index was 1. The results showed that the carbon segregation index could be controlled to less than 1.05 and the equiaxial crystal ratio could be controlled to more than 60% for medium carbon steel.
