AbstractA kind of passivated magnesium powders are made by adding a sort of rare earth oxide to the passivating agent. The surface layer of the present magnesium powder was studied by using SEMXRD and AES. This kind of powder seems to be uniform and compact , and no obvious holes or cracks were found on the coating from the SEM observation. The results of XRD and AES indicate that the surface layer mainly consists of MgO and a small quantity of MgCl. Line scanning analysis shows the line distribution of the elements along the crosssection of the coating. The estimated depth of the coating is about 7~8 m based on the experimental results. Its combustion-inhibiting time under 1KG-*9000 comes to 25.7 seconds which is longer than that of the common passivated magnesium powder.
