Abstract��The total length of 60CrMoV guide roller is 3��KG-*9��400 mm and the weight is about 1.4 t. The main working surface (320��2��KG-*9��000 mm) of the roller occurred peeling and cracking after external grinding. Appearance characters of the surface peeling and cracking were made clear by means of analysis the traces on the surface of the guide roller. Chemical compositions and microhardness test results of the surface and microstructures differences between the harden zone and base metal were analyzed. It was concluded that the character of peeling and cracking for the guide roller was grinding cracks, and the grinding stress and thermal stress were the direct reasons for the peeling and cracking.
