AbstractSurface upwarp defects in the hot rolled steel plate products are investigated by means of optical microscope (OM) and scan electron microscope (SEM). It is concluded that under the surface upwarping defects are mainly iron oxide, second oxide particles, and slag that correspond to three different morphologies respectively. According to EDS results, it can be concluded that surface upwarp defects in hot rolled plates are attributed to rolledin scale, gas cavity in casting blank, crack in casting blank, misadjusting of SP rolling mill, and droppedin crystallizer fluxes. The causes of surface upwarping defects in hot rolled plates are discussed in detail.
