Abstract��The failure of 40 Cr steel end axle is analyzed by metallographic examination, chemical analysis and mechanical testing. The result showed that the failure of 40 Cr steel end axle belongs to fatigue fracture. The stress accumulation in the end axle originated from improper welding led to the fatigue fracture. The microstructure of the material after quenching and tempering was found to be tempered bainite,rather than tempered sorbite expected by the technology,another reason of the failure is the improper heat treatment.
