Crack Failure Analysis of a Cylinder Sleeve From a Diesel Engine

Abstract��A failure analysis was performed on a diesel engine cylinder sleeve. The results indicated that the chemical composition and microstructure are in line with relevant technical standards. According to the macroscopic fracture observation of the cracked cylinder sleeve and analysis on characteristics of cast iron, the crack may be caused by internal stress-induced cold cracking. That keeping at 500 �� for two hours was considered to be the best process parameter for stress relief annealing, after optimizing the aging treatment on the cylinder sleeve based on internal stress test. The crack failure of the cylinder sleeve was resolved completely by the revised techniques.
