AbstractThe high strength chain steel 23MnNiMoCr54 used for major equipment components in coal mines was broken during trial production test.Various measures, such as metallographic testing, chemical composition analysis, scanning electron microscopy fracture test and auger electron spectroscopy, have been applied to find out causes of the fracture. The results showed that chemical composition, gas contents, macro structure and inclusions of the chain steel met the requirements of related specifications. Its metallographic structure is temper troostite and actual grain size is grade 4.Fracture is of the typical intergranular brittle rupture. An improper heat treatment in the production is the cause of fracture.Extreme quenching temperature led to over-heating structure, which resulted in coarse grains of the chain steel. In the following tempering process; the unsuitable heating temperature or heating time caused impurity elements segregation in grain boundaries, which resulted in temper brittleness. This is the origin of intergranular brittle fracture of chain steel during trial production test.
