Abstract��Thermal analysis method was introduced briefly and applied to study the combustion and pyrolysis characteristics at different heating rates. It was found that the combustion of Ningdong bituminous coal was a progressive oxidation and exothermal process. With the rate increases, the flare point, the temperature of the maximum combustion rate and complete combustion were increased. But it had an insignificant influence on the primary temperature of volatile matters. With the rate increases, the temperature of the maximum pyrolysis rate was increased. The primary temperature of the pyrolysates and the maximum pyrolysis rate were weakly affected.
