Abstract��In this investigation, the instrument gain, the singal-to-noise ratio and the sensitivity surplus of the immersion and the contact methods in railway-wheel ultrasonic testing were compared. Static flat-testing results showed that: by using non-focused probe, the signal-to-noise ratio and the sensitivity of the margin of the immersion lower than those of the contact method, and the noise level of the immersion method is also lower than that of the contact method; by using focused-immersion-probe, the signal-to-noise ratio and the sensitivity margin of the immersion method can reach the level of the contact method.
