AbstractIn this study, an automatic ultrasonic detector for train wheel flaw detection is developed for the need of trains running speed increase and testing wheels in a more accurate and rapid way. The detector which has 8 channels in 2 groups can detect the wheels inner side surface and tread at the same time through rotatational scanning. Automatic motion is done in a way where IPC (Industrial Personal Computer) along with DMC motion control card controls a hydraulic system and electromotors. The WT (wavelet transform) is applied during the process of noise reduction of ultrasonic echo, and the overall detection software is programmed based on Labwindows/CVI to perform man-machine interaction. Practical application in workshop reveals that it owes appropriate structure and high stability. This detector can relieve workers from high labour intensity and significantly increase efficiency and accuracy of train wheel flaw detection.
