AbstractCracking was found at the upper end of the wall in the corner positions of a rear shock absorber box of the automobile frame after stamping of the blank of 510L hot-rolled plate. Cracked sample was analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron micsoscopy (SEM), mechanical and chemical analysis. It was found that the rear shock absorber box stamped directly with sheared blank was torn by the tensile stress induced by the bulging of metal in the inner wall of the box due to the poor metal flow at the corner positions. The aforementioned torn crack was further propagated to macroscopic crack resulted from the additional tensile stress caused by the friction between the terrace die and the wall of the box owing to poor lubrication and positional deviation during stamping.
