AbstractTwo different types of magnetic trace (MT) of 42CrMo crank are analyzed by magnetic test and the results showed that the MTs are resulted from inclusions and linear metal. Inclusion MT forms when internal inclusion is exposed to the surface in forging process and linear metal MT is caused by internal serious segregation of carbon and complex deforming in crank site of loose steel core. Inclusion can be controlled by strengthening floating of inclusion during refining, preventing slag being entrapped during casting by means of ultrasonic and infrared inspection. Loose core and carbon segregation can be reduced by improving continuous casting process such as casting overheating, electromagnetic stirring or soft reduction and rolling process such as billet heating and controlled rolling and controlled cooling.
