AbstractShell is one of the common surface defects in hot-rolled pipeline steel X80, which have complicated causes and different morphology. Based on the practical production of a steel factory, three kinds of typical shell defects in hot-rolled pipeline steel X80 were summarized. The causes and corresponding morphology of each type of shell defect was analyzed, and preventive measures were proposed, which was helpful to understanding and distinguishing different shell defects and provided guide to production.
