Abstract��Ultrasonic testing��?macroscopic examination�� metallographic examination and SEM?was used to investigate the flake of low carbon low alloy steel. Macroscopic characteristics and micro-morphology of?white spot defect?of?steel plate was studied in detail. The results showed that under the action of the rolling force in the vertical?direction?of the plate surface�� the plane of the flake in the middle of the plate is?distributed in parallel to the surface of the plate��?and mixed with the?porosity and the segregation?zone?resulting?in?illegible flake on the macroscopic examination acid leaching?sample?.?The flake?occurs?in granular bainite region?in?the pearlite bands. The flake?of steel plate makes?the?tensile strength at[z]direction slightly reduced�� but the ductility?index?and the impact toughness index?at[z]direction reduced obviously.?The ultrasonic inspection��?along with?horizontal?fracture observation��?is an effective method for?the identification of the flake.??The effective measures to eliminate the?flake are roasting the alloying materials�� drying the synthetic slag?and powder?materials used in smelting process�� and slowly cooling both the ingot and the billet.
