AbstractThe longitudinal crack defects were observed on the surface of 36Mn2V hot-rolled round steel. The macro characteristic and formation reason of crack were systemically analyzed by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and energy disperse spectroscopy. The results indicated that the longitudinal cracks on the surface of 36Mn2V hot-rolled round steel were formed during the rolling process. The cracks were from the hypodermal slag of casting powder due to the liquid level fluctuation of crystallizer in continuous casting process. The action failure of stopper rod mechanism was the main reason for the liquid level fluctuation of crystallizer. The hypodermal slag of casting blank could be basically eliminated through a series of effective technical measures. Consequently, the generation of longitudinal crack defects on the surface of hot-rolled round steel could be avoided.
