AbstractThe ultrasonic test was conducted using the oblique incidence transverse wave mode of phased-array ultrasound testing. The detection capability of oblique incidence transverse wave mode to the common tunnel defects and incomplete welding defects in friction stirring weld of aluminum alloy sections was discussed. The cross hole and vertical hole were used to simulate the tunnel defects and the vertical groove was used to simulate the incomplete welding defects. The test results showed that this method exhibited good capability to the detection of tunnel defects and incomplete welding defects of weldless sections. The detection results of different type of defects were compared. It proved that the detection capability of cross-hole defects was best. The testing results of real weld samples indicated that the oblique incidence transverse wave mode could effectively avoid the influence of arc corrugation on surface.
