Abstract��The fracture morphology�� microstructure and inclusions of layered samples of AH36 ship plate steel were analyzed to investigate the formation mechanism and influencing factors for tensile layering of ship plate steel. The banded structure was formed in rolling process due to the presence of center segregation. Meanwhile�� due to the presence of plastic MnS inclusions�� composite oxide inclusions�� carbonitride of Nb��Ti and H in thickness center of hot rolled plate�� the weakest position was easily formed in rolling process�� thus causing layering defects.
