AbstractThe joint flange of cooling water pipe of continuous casting machine in one company was fractured. In order to identify the failure cause the chemical composition hardness microstructure and the appearance of fracture were tested and analyzed. The results indicated that the content of C in flange material was 0.17% which was far above the standard. The content of Ti was only 0.004% which was far below the standard. Moreover the content of Ni and Cr only reached the lower limit of standard request. Due to the unqualified material of flange the poor-Cr zone was easily formed at crystal boundary and adjacent areas during service reducing the corrosion resistance of material. The lack of Ni content further accelerated the intercrystalline corrosion which caused the failure of flange in use.
